History of our Flag
The story of Puerto Rico has never been told through one flag alone.
Each banner carried by our people represents a different chapter in the struggle for identity, liberation, survival, and resistance. From the Grito de Lares uprising in 1868, to the Intentona de Yauco revolt of 1897, to the modern black resistance flag raised in protest against colonialism and injustice, these symbols carry the spirit of a people who have never stopped fighting to define themselves on their own terms.
Puerto Ricans have endured colonization, displacement, economic hardship, political struggle, and natural disasters, yet generation after generation, we continue to rise.
Our history is one of resilience.
Of culture preserved despite oppression.
Of pride carried across the island and throughout the diaspora.
These flags are more than colors and symbols.
They are reminders of sacrifice, resistance, unity, and hope.
They tell the story of a people who continue to endure, create, rebuild, and fight forward.
For Borikén.
For the island.
For the people.
